Level 1 — Asking questions

You type a question, get an answer. Useful, but nothing builds up. Level up:

  • Start prompts with: *"Before you answer, ask me any questions you need to do this well."*
  • End with: *"Check your work and fix any mistakes."*

Level 2 — A workspace that knows you

Use Projects so Claude remembers your business across chats. Level up:

  • Create a project for each role (e.g. Marketing, Estimating) and ask: *"Interview me to write instructions for this project."*
  • Upload your price lists, templates and past work to the project.

Level 3 — Connected to your tools

Connectors let Claude read from apps like Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, Notion or Slack, so it works from your real data instead of guesses. Level up:

  • Connect the one app you use most and ask Claude to pull what it needs.
  • Ask for charts, mock-ups or small interactive tools right in the chat instead of exporting to other apps.

Level 4 — Reusable skills

A skill is a saved set of instructions for a task you repeat: writing quotes, formatting invoices, replying to enquiries. Level up:

  • List the tasks you do every week. Turn the most repetitive one into a skill first.
  • Ask Claude to interview you about how you do it — you already have a process, it's just not written down.

Level 5 — Building your own tools

Claude Code builds real software: dashboards, calculators, automations and internal apps. Level up:

  • Start small: *"Build a page where I enter job measurements and it calculates materials and cost."*
  • Use browser automation for repetitive web tasks like filling forms.

Level 6 — Agents that coordinate work

One main agent plans and delegates; specialised agents each own one workflow; a reviewer agent checks the output. Level up:

  • Only automate a process that already works by hand.
  • Keep a human check on anything that sends money, emails customers or deletes data.

Where to start

Most people get the biggest jump going from Level 1 to Level 2. Set up one Project this week.
