Original guide

1. Validate the idea before building anything

Most founders build for months before checking anyone wants it. Stress-test first: I want to start a business doing [X] for [audience]. Play devil's advocate. What are the five biggest reasons this fails? What would you need to see to believe it works?

  • Research the market, competitors and ideal customer
  • Find gaps in positioning and pressure-test your pricing
  • Identify the one problem your customer would actually pay to solve

2. Write two core files

Create these once; every future chat improves.

  • about-me.md – what the business does, your ideal customer, pricing, stage, goals for 30 days and 12 months, what you say no to, your resources and limits.
  • brand-voice.md – your tone (e.g. friendly, direct, helpful), words you use and words you never use, example phrases and key messages.

Be specific. What goes in shapes every output.

3. Build a Project per function

Upload the core files to each Project so every chat starts with your context.

  • Strategy – positioning, research, competitor notes
  • Content – brand rules, post examples, formats
  • Operations – processes, templates, team instructions

One Project per recurring job. Dumping everything in one place makes it harder for Claude to know what matters.

4. Create your first business assets

Ask for these as live, editable artifacts:

  • A one-page pitch for clients or investors
  • A simple financial model: revenue, costs, margin
  • Landing-page copy: headline, subhead, call to action
  • A positioning doc: ideal customer, unique selling point, messaging
  • A 30-day content calendar
  • A pricing page with tiers and objection handling

5. Write sales scripts and outreach

The part most founders put off longest. Write a short message to a [job title] at a [company type]. I help them with [problem]. Lead with value and don't mention my product until they reply. Also ask for a follow-up sequence and a sales-call outline: opening, questions, handling objections, closing.

6. Connect your tools

Connect Google Drive, Gmail, Notion or Slack so Claude can find files mid-chat instead of you uploading them. Look for Connectors in Claude's settings.

  • Pull a strategy doc into a client brief in one message
  • Summarise a busy Slack channel and draft follow-ups

7. Produce real documents

Have Claude create proposals, scopes of work, reports, onboarding docs, SOPs and sales decks as Word, Excel, PDF or slide files you can send.

8. Build the product with Claude Code

  • Non-technical? Describe what you want in plain English and build a simple first version, or hire one technical person to work alongside Claude Code.
  • Technical? It's the fastest way to go from idea to shipped.

9. Set up a daily business brief

Schedule a recurring task: Read my project notes and recent emails. Write a 5-bullet morning brief: top 3 priorities, most urgent follow-ups, and one thing I'm probably forgetting.

Pro tip: the better your two core files, the more Claude works like a co-founder that never forgets.

Features vary by plan. See the Claude Help Center for current setup steps.
