Original guide

AI can speed up every stage, but the books that sell still have your ideas, your voice and careful editing.

1. Pick an idea that sells

Give me 10 book ideas in [genre]. For each, describe the target reader and what makes it different. Check what's selling: browse the Amazon Kindle bestsellers in that category.

2. Plot and characters (fiction) or structure (non-fiction)

  • Fiction: Outline a [genre] novel with major plot points and detailed profiles of the hero and villain.
  • Non-fiction: Create a chapter outline for a book helping [reader] achieve [result].

3. Draft chapter by chapter

Help me draft Chapter 1 from this outline, in a gripping style. Here are my notes: [paste]. Rewrite every chapter in your own words. Readers spot generic AI text fast.

4. Dialogue and settings

Write a tense confrontation between [characters] and describe the setting vividly. Use as a starting point, then make it yours.

5. Edit properly

  • Read it aloud
  • Ask AI: Act as a tough editor. List plot holes, slow parts and repeated phrases in this chapter.
  • Consider a human editor from Reedsy for the final pass

6. Title, cover and description

Act as a book copywriter. Give me 10 title ideas and a back-cover description for this book: [summary]. Design the cover in Canva or hire a cover designer.

7. Publish

  • Amazon: Kindle Direct Publishing — free to publish ebooks and paperbacks
  • Everywhere else: Draft2Digital sends your ebook to Apple Books, Kobo and more
  • Format free with Reedsy's book editor

Know the rules

  • Amazon KDP asks you to disclose AI-generated content (text, images or translations) when you publish. Answer honestly.
  • Don't copy other authors' text, characters or covers.
  • Check that you have rights to every image you use.

Getting sales

Publishing is the start. Build a simple author page, share chapters on social media, gather early reviews from real readers, and write the next book — series sell better than one-offs.
