QR codes are everywhere now, on flyers, menus, business cards and shop counters. They're free to make, but a lot of people get caught by sites that make "dynamic" QR codes which stop working unless you pay a monthly fee. You only find out after you've printed 500 flyers.
Here's how to make one that keeps working.
Static or dynamic?
- A static QR code has your link built right into it. It works forever and costs nothing. The only catch is you can't change the link later.
- A dynamic QR code points to the maker's website first, then redirects. You can change the link later, but if the subscription ends, the code stops working.
For most small businesses, a static code is the right choice.
Step 1: Decide what the code should open
Good options include:
- Your WhatsApp chat: use wa.me/1876XXXXXXX (your full number with country code, no plus sign or spaces)
- Your Google Business Profile, so people can leave a review
- Your website, menu or price list
- Your Instagram or Facebook page
Step 2: Make the code
Go to a free generator like QR Code Monkey. Paste your link, and make sure it's set to create a static code.
Step 3: Make it look like yours
Change the colours to match your brand and add your logo in the middle if you like. Keep good contrast: dark code on a light background scans best.
Step 4: Download a high-quality file
Download it as SVG or a large PNG for printing. Small, blurry images don't scan well.
Step 5: Test it before you print
Scan it with at least two or three different phones, both Android and iPhone. Check that it opens the right page.
Tips for printing
- Make it at least 2 cm by 2 cm, and bigger for posters.
- Leave a little blank space around the code.
- Add a short line under it, like "Scan to chat on WhatsApp", so people know what it does.
- Don't put it somewhere people can't stand close enough to scan, like a moving vehicle or a high billboard.
