"Storage full" usually pops up at the worst time, like when you're trying to take a photo or update WhatsApp. A full phone also runs slower. Here's how to clear space safely, starting with the quick wins.
1. See what's using the space
Go to Settings, then Storage (or Battery and device care, then Storage on Samsung). You'll see what's taking up the most room, usually photos, videos, WhatsApp and apps.
2. Use Files by Google
The free Files by Google app finds junk files, duplicates, old downloads and large files for you. Tap Clean and go through its suggestions. It's one of the easiest ways to free up space quickly.
3. Clean up WhatsApp
WhatsApp is often the biggest culprit, because every video and voice note in every group gets saved.
- Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Storage and data, then Manage storage.
- Look at Larger than 5 MB and the biggest chats. Delete videos and forwards you don't need.
- Under Media auto-download, turn off automatic downloads for videos and documents.
4. Back up photos, then remove them from the phone
Turn on backup in Google Photos first and check it's finished. Then tap your profile picture and choose Free up space. This deletes only the photos that are already safely backed up.
5. Clear app caches
Go to Settings, then Apps, pick a big app like Facebook, TikTok or Chrome, tap Storage and then Clear cache. Don't tap Clear data unless you're happy to log in again and lose that app's settings.
6. Remove apps you don't use
Most of us have apps we haven't opened in months. Uninstall them. You can always download them again later.
7. Check your Downloads folder
PDFs, flyers and voice notes pile up in Downloads. Open the Files app and delete what you don't need.
8. Use a memory card if your phone has a slot
Move photos and videos to an SD card, and set your camera to save there.
What not to do
- Don't install "phone cleaner" or "booster" apps that promise miracles. Many are full of ads and some are harmful.
- Don't factory reset unless everything is backed up and nothing else has worked.
