Registering your business makes it official. It helps you open a business bank account, get contracts with bigger companies and build trust with customers. In Jamaica, it's handled by the Companies Office of Jamaica (COJ), and most of it can be done online.

Step 1: Decide on the type of business

  • Business name (sole trader or partnership). The simplest and cheapest option. You and the business are legally the same, so you're personally responsible for its debts.
  • Limited company. The company is its own legal entity, which protects your personal assets. It costs more and has more paperwork, like annual returns.

Most small businesses start with a business name and switch to a company as they grow.

Step 2: Check that your name is available

Search the Companies Office website to see if your name is already taken. It's also worth checking the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office for trademarks, and making sure the matching social media handles are free.

Step 3: Get your documents ready

For a business name, you'll usually need:

  • A valid government ID
  • Your TRN
  • Proof of address

For a company, you'll also need the articles of incorporation and details of directors and owners.

Step 4: Register online

Use the Companies Office online system to fill in the business registration form and pay the fee. The same form can also register the business with other agencies like TAJ, NIS and NHT, which saves separate trips. Check current fees on the COJ website before you apply.

Step 5: After you're registered

  • Open a business bank account. Keep business and personal money separate from day one.
  • Keep records. Save every receipt and invoice. It makes tax time much easier.
  • Know your tax duties. File your income tax return each year. If you have staff, you'll need to handle payroll deductions.
  • GCT. You must register for GCT once your yearly sales go over the threshold, which has been J$15 million since April 2025. Check with TAJ for the current figure.
  • Renewals. Business names need to be renewed, and companies file annual returns. Put the dates in your calendar.
