Your SBA (School-Based Assessment) counts towards your final CSEC grade, and it's one of the few parts of the exam you control. A good SBA takes pressure off the final paper. Here's how to do it well without a last-minute panic.
1. Read the guidelines first
Get the SBA guidelines and mark scheme from your teacher, or from the syllabus on the CXC website. They show exactly what you'll be marked on. Many students lose marks simply because they left out a required section.
2. Pick a topic you can actually research
Choose something specific and realistic. "Pollution in Jamaica" is too broad. "Plastic waste at [your community] beach" is easier to research and gives you real data.
3. Make a timeline
Work backwards from the deadline your teacher gives you:
- Week 1 to 2: choose your topic and plan
- Week 3 to 6: research and collect data
- Week 7 to 8: write the first draft
- Week 9: get feedback from your teacher
- Week 10: final changes and hand in
Do a little every week. SBAs left to the last week always show it.
4. Collect your own data where you can
Questionnaires, interviews, observations and experiments make an SBA stronger. Keep your raw data, like filled questionnaires and notes, as you may need to show it.
5. Present it neatly
- Use clear headings that match the mark scheme.
- Put data into tables and graphs, with titles and labels.
- Number your pages and include a table of contents if required.
6. Write in your own words
Teachers and CXC can spot copied work. Read your sources, close them, and then write what you understood. Copying from the internet or another student can get the whole SBA thrown out.
7. Cite your sources
List every book, website and person you used. Your teacher will tell you which format to use.
8. Ask for feedback early
Hand in a draft before the deadline and ask what's missing. Teachers are usually happy to help students who start early.
9. Check before you submit
- Every section in the mark scheme is there.
- Your name, candidate number and school are on it.
- Spelling and grammar are checked.
- You've kept a copy for yourself.
A steady, planned SBA is one of the easiest ways to boost your final grade.
